Bloodborne has a lot of areas. The Hunter visits many different areas during the course of the game. I want to go over my ranking of every area. Every area has its pros and cons. There are 20 areas in the game, and all of them have some things that I enjoy, as well as some things that I dislike. Let's get started.

This is not going to be including Chalice Dungeons.

#20: Nightmare of Mensis[]

I hate this place for a few reasons. The biggest issue is the Frenzy. I can't even count how many times that I have died to that stupid Frenzy. The spiders are also really annoying. Fucking Edgar. I hate Edgar. He gets in your way, and he can kill you quickly with his stupid Rosmarinus thing. And the Dogs with Crow heads, and Crow with Dog heads? Really, FromSoft?! What’s the point? This area is so frustrating. At least there are a few shortcuts, and a decent boss fight at the end, but that does not save this area from being at the bottom of our list. The area doesn't look bad. The big castle looks really awesome. It’s a shame that such a great looking area is ruined by so many awful features. I would love to love this place, but I just can’t.

#19: Lecture Building[]

This area is boring. There are two different types of enemies, some average loot, and the portals to the nightmare areas. That's really about it. You meet Patches the Spider, who is a massive asshole. At least you can get the Augur, which is really nice. The area is very short, which is disappointing. In terms of look, the Lecture Building looks alright, but there are so many areas that look better than it. This area has some okay lore, and is a good place to farm Blood Echoes, but there just isn’t that much here to make it memorable for me.

#18: Iosefka's Clinic []

Iosefka's Clinic is probably the most pointless area in the game. The only real reasons to come here are to get the Cainhurst Summons and one of the Umbilical Cords. But that's really about it. The Oeden Writhe rune is okay, but not really necessary. Iosefka is an annoying fight, but is managable. The area looks bland, and is not very memorable aside from the fact that we all started our journey here. The rewards that you get from sending people to the imposter Iosefka are not bad. The way you get to the Clinic through the poison swamp in the Forbidden Woods is really unique. There is so much great stuff about this area, but it’s just not enough. Overall, I don’t hate this area. It’s a pretty good area, but I don’t think that it should go any higher.

#17: Hemwick Charnel Lane[]

Hemwick Charnel Lane is an area that is very easy to die in. The part with all of those Riflemen killed me more times than I would like to admit. The Executioners are difficult, but managable if you are decent at parrying. The area looks pretty ugly, and the boss fight is one of the worst in the game. It’s not a bad place to farm blood echoes, and is essential to accessing another area. The Hemwick Grave Women are pretty cool. Those Hunting Dogs look badass. The enemies in Hemwick are really cool. Sadly, though, there’s just too many things wrong with this area that keeps it from going any higher.

#16: Abandoned Old Workshop []

This area is very pointless. There's nothing here. You get an umbilical cord, The Doll's set, the Old Hunter Bone, Small Hair Ornament, and some insight. That’s really about it. The area is not easy to reach, and I have died so many times trying to get to it. There’s some interesting lore behind the area, as well as some pretty good loot, but that's really all that this area has to offer. The area below it is pretty cool. Those armored Huntsmen are badass. If this area was easier to get to, then I probably wouldn’t dislike it, but that completely ruins this area for me.

#15: Mergo's Loft Middle[]

Mergo's Loft Middle is an area that is extremely valuable. It’s the best place in the game to farm Blood Echoes, and you can get so much good loot. The Blood Rock, Moon Runes, and Choir Bell are all very important items, and they are found in this area. The Winter Lanterns, though, are annoying as hell. The enemy variety is pretty limited, and those pigs are freaky. Like the Nightmare of Mensis, this area looks fantastic. It’s easily one of the best looking areas in the entire Soulsborne series. The boss at the end is also one of my favorites. Overall, this area is essential for so many things. You get a lot of valuable items here, and there is no better place to farm Blood Echoes. Sure, you can work something out early in the game for farming, but towards the end of the game, this is where you farm.

#14: Hypogean Gaol[]

I have no idea how to pronounce this area’s name, so I call it the Underground Jail. I love how you get to the area. Getting killed by a Kidnapper, and getting kidnapped is pretty cool. The music playing while in this place is very cool, and the enemy variety is alright. The loot is pretty good, and there’s a great boss in the area. The Hypogean Gaol looks great, and is a pretty good area. You also meet one of my waifus here.

#13: Nightmare Frontier[]

"Why is the Nightmare Frontier so high, Lancer?" "Lancer, how dare you put the Nightmare Frontier so high on your list!" "Kill yourself, Lancer!"

Okay. You're not going to like the fact that I'm putting the Nightmare Frontier this high on the list. This is probably one of the most hated areas in the game, but I strongly disagree. I actually kind of like this area. First of all, the Frontier is easily one of the most beautiful areas in the entire Soulsborne series. Everything just looks so alive here. The enemy variety is pretty good, and the loot is really great. The poison swamp is a bit annoying, but is manageable due to how much poison resistance you can get in the game. The boss at the end is also really good. No matter how many times I died here on my first playthrough, I never found myself getting frustrated or annoyed. The challenge is so fair. I used to hate Winter Lanterns, but I don’t anymore, so I don’t count that against the area. I can’t count how much time I’ve spent searching for loot in the Frontier. There’s so much to find here. Overall, I love the Nightmare Frontier. I’m probably the only Bloodborne player who would say that truthfully. It’s not a bad area, so I like it.

#12: Byrgenwerth[]

"Byrgenwerth... Byrgenwerth... Blasphemous murderers... Blood-crazed fiends... Atonement for the wretches...By the wrath of Mother Kos... Mercy for the poor, wizened child... Mercy, oh please..."

Byrgenwerth is a very cool place. I love the look of the area, and the lore is excellent. The enemies, on the other hand, are easy. Garden of Eyes? Easy. Brainsuckers? Annoying, but easy (If they had hoods on, then they would be difficult). Discount Bed of Chaos? Easy. Yurie? Annoying as shit, but easy. Rom? Not so easy. You meet Willem, who is a bit out of his mind, so you should probably put him down. I would have loved to have visited this place when it was at its prime. You know, before the beasts. That would have been really cool. The lore adds so much to the area. The only thing keeping this area from entering the top 10 is how short it is. I do like this area, but there are many more areas that I enjoy over this one. Still, though, I absolutely love Byrgenwerth.

#11: Yahar'gul, Unseen Village[]

I don't know why, but there is something preventing me from disliking this area. The challenge seems fair to me (except for Amygdala's laser. That is just annoying), and the area looks fantastic. Yahar'gul is a very fun area. It is probably the second or third best looking area, and the enemy variety is great. I have no idea why I love this area so much, but I just do. Just like the Nightmare Frontier, I’ve died in Yahar’gul countless times, but still love the area. The Bell-ringing Women can be frustrating, but I actually like that aspect of the area. It’s very unique, and adds to the area. I also love the boss at the end. There’s too much to love about this place. The Cramped Caskets are annoying, but are totally worth killing because they drop some really good Blood Gems. Those Scourge Beasts are freaky looking. What happened to them? I have no idea. Overall, this area is very underrated. I love Yahar’gul, and always will.

#10: Forbidden Woods[]

The Forbidden Woods is a great area. It looks fantastic, is great for farming Blood Echoes, has great loot, and one of my favorite bosses at the end. It offers a great challenge, which I love. You can access Iosefka’s Clinic from here, which is pretty cool. This is the first area in the game that can be used to farm Blood Echoes. There’s so much to love about the Forbidden Woods. There are a few problems, though. The enemy variety is a bit generic. While Large Huntsmen are one of my favorite enemies in the game, and I do love regular Huntsmen, they are not unique to this area, and are nothing new. I also hate the second half of the area. I am terrified of snakes, so you can tell why I hate that part of the area. I’ve died to those big ass snakes at least 10 times. Each. The shortcuts are very important, since this area is probably the longest in the game. Valtr is one of my favorite NPCs, so he adds a good bit to the area. If you need to farm Twin Blood Stone Shards for some reason, this is a good place to farm them. You get a great set of attire, and one of the best Hunter Tools. Those snakes are just stupid and unnecessary, and take so much away from a fantastic area. I do love this area, but those two problems prevent it from going any higher. That makes the Forbidden Woods a pretty disappointing area. If FromSoft didn’t put the snakes here, then the Forbidden Woods could potentially be in the top 5. Such a shame.

#9: Hunter's Dream[]

The Hunter's Dream is a great area, but it shouldn't be any higher. There's not much to do here. You can level up by talking to The Doll, equip runes, upgrade your weapons, and buy stuff. That's really about it. The area does have two really good bosses, so that's pretty cool. The lore is.... I’m not sure what the lore to this area is, so I can’t really comment on that. The area looks fantastic, especially Gehrman’s boss arena. Overall, this area is very important, but there’s not much to it.

#8: Cathedral Ward[]

The Cathedral Ward is a great area. There’s so much good stuff here. My favorite thing about it is how much it leads to. There are several areas that you access from the Cathedral Ward, which is really cool. The area looks fantastic, and the enemy variety is very fitting. It also has one of my favorite bosses. I like to consider the Cathedral Ward the “crossroads” of Yharnam. It leads to so much. My favorite enemy is encountered here, which definitely adds to the area. Overall, the Cathedral Ward is an amazing area, which lands it a spot in the top 10.

#7: Upper Cathedral Ward[]

The Upper Cathedral Ward is a really fun place. It looks great, and has some of the best enemies in the game. The Celestial Children are nasty, the Brainsuckers are annoying, and the Scourge Beasts are terrifying. The dark room is really cool. It’s spooky, which is really cool. I’m not afraid to admit that I’ve had nightmares about this place. When ever I need to farm Blood Stone Chunks at the end of the game, I come here with my Eye runes, and kill the Scourge Beasts. One of the best Hunter Tools is found here, which is great. Unfortunately, this area has two of the worst bosses in the game. That's a shame, and takes so much away from the Upper Cathedral Ward.

#6: Fishing Hamlet[]

The Fishing Hamlet is a great looking area. It’s really cool, and I do like it. It probably has the best loot in the entire game. There are so many Blood Stone Chunks and a Blood Rock. The enemies are very unique, which adds a lot to the area. I’m not too familiar with the lore, but I know enough to say that the Fishing Hamlet represents it’s lore very well. I don’t think that this place is as great as the area that came before it, but it’s still a fantastic area. Sadly, there are two problems with this place, and, in all fairness, they are two very major downsides. In order to get the Rakuyo, you have to fight two Shit Whales, which is one of the hardest things to do in the entire series. Also, that fucking Orphan! This place has the worst enemy and second worst boss in the entire series. The fact that that doesn’t ruin this area really shows how great it is.

#5: Central Yharnam[]

Central Yharnam is a great introduction to my favorite game. I love this area so much. It has two of the best bosses in the game, and has some very cool enemies. It looks great, and there's nothing bad about it. I don't have much to say about it, though. It's the first area in the game, so that’s what makes it memorable.

#4: Old Yharnam[]

This area is amazing. It’s challenging, since you have to dodge Djura's chain gun while either killing or running past beasts. The area looks great, and has some okay lore. The boss at the end is not great, but not bad either. The enemies are very unique, and they fit in with the area. The lore is very interesting, and the area is a flawless representation of its lore. Djura’s Ally would be frustrating if he didn’t love killing himself my running into fire all the time. Djura is probably the easiest Hunter NPC in the game. You just hit him twice, and he falls off the tower. Sometimes, he commits suicide by straight up jumping off the tower. What a dumbass.

#3: Hunter's Nightmare[]

The opening area in the DLC is perfect. It looks great, has amazing enemy variety, great loot, and has a few good bosses. The Old Hunters are some of my favorite enemies in the game, and they add a lot to the area. Laurcence is a great boss. The River of Blood is pretty cool, and the loot is perfect. Djura’s Disciple is one of my favorite Hunter NPCs. He’s really cool. The Nightmare Executioners are terrible, but you can easily run or sneak past them. The Fat Bloodlickers are pretty cool. Ludwig is a very fun fight. Laurence is also a great boss. So many great weapons can be found here as well. The amount of loot that is found in the Nightmare is amazing. Overall, this area is a perfect introduction to a great DLC.

#2: Research Hall[]

I love this place. It looks cool, has some amazing loot, unique enemies, and my favorite boss. In terms of challenge, the Research Hall is perfect. The Clocktower Patients can be annoying, but they drop really useful items, and give you a lot of Blood Echoes. My favorite boss is found in the Research Hall, along with an okay boss. I love how everything changes after you spin that thing on the top of the place. That is very unique, and adds a lot to the area. The balcony area is awesome. All of those Arcane wielding Clocktower Patients are really fun to go up against. The loot is really cool, which is nice. There's nothing wrong with this area. It's so good. This area is absolutely fantastic. The Research Hall is one of only two areas that I think are absolutely flawless, along with the number 1 spot.

#1: Forsaken Cainhurst Castle[]

Let's be honest. Could this have been anything else? No. It couldn't. This area is so good. It’s easily the best looking area in the game, and maybe even in the entire series. It has easily the best enemy variety in the game, with almost every enemy being unique to this area. The loot is easily the best in the game. The boss is one of my favorites, and you are able to join my second favorite covenant. You also get access to the Cainhurst Set, Chikage, Evelyn, and the Reiter-whateverthefuck. There's too much to love about this area. I love it so damn much. I cannot think of a single bad thing to say about Cainhurst. It’s flawless.
